12 International Alexander The Great Marathon
April 2nd Pella-Thessaloniki
On 2nd of April will be great sport event in Greece – Alexander The Great Marathon. It is annual marathon race which is held between cities Pella and Thessaloniki.
Marathon was born in Marathon of Greece in 490 B.C. by the effort of the soldier Pheidippides who ran this distance to declare to the Athenians the victory of the Greeks, falling dead because of the overexertion. Today there are thousands of marathons in every country, making thus this sport the one with the most runners in the world and making the word «marathon», the common one among all languages worldwide.
The first International Marathon Alexander the Great was held on the 16th of April in 2006. It was result of an ambition of many people from sport and cultural institutions all over Greece. As this marathon is member of International Marathons Association, no other marathon in the world is allowed to use the name of Alexander the Great.
The race starts at the statue of Alexander The Great in Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great and capital of Ancient Macedonia, and finishes in Thessaloniki, which is the modern capital of Macedonia, at the White Tower. The route of the International Marathon Alexander The Great is not very difficult. Its main characteristics are the low altitude fluctuations, the continuous east direction and the long straight road. In addition to the marathon race, the day’s events include popular fun runs over five and ten kilometers.
This International Marathon which symbolizes one of the most recognizable personalities of humanity, Alexander the Great, is not just a major and International sporting event. It is a path in history, a path in ancient Greek culture, a Path full of Greece.
